The Highway is into its sixth year of holding its Mushroom Month. Launching on 1 July and running for the entirety of the month I was lucky enough to be invited to the tasting night where they presented the special mushroom themed menu.
Swiss brown mushroom and courgette roulade with smoked tomato bearnaise, parmesan crisp and pickled pearl onion. The roulade was light, moist and juicy. The pickled onion provided a good tangy contrast to the sweet tomato béarnaise and the parmesan crisp gave the dish a beautiful salty crunch. An amazing start to the night ahead.
Truffled duxelles raviolo filled with egg yolk and sage beurre noisette. The raviolo was cooked al dente and had the perfect amount of bite. The egg yolk was still soft inside and the sauce was rich and buttery.
Forest mushroom gnocchi with porcini, shimeji, fried enoki, oyster mushrooms and chestnut cream. There is also the option of adding prawns for a small extra cost. This was my favourite dish of the night. The gnocchi had a crispy outer coating and was pillowy soft. The chestnut cream was luxuriously creamy and complimented the crispy gnocchi perfectly.
Eye fillet and pickled king brown mushroom with sweet corn foam, celeriac fondant and black sesame. Unfortunately I did not get to try this dish as by the time they had sliced up the steak the dessert had already come out but it looked beautiful nonetheless.
Mushrooms as a dessert? Is that even possible?! When I think of mushrooms I always think of savoury dishes so this was really surprising. Enchanted mushroom garden. White truffle cold custard, candied enoki, chocolate soil and marshmallow meringue. The custard had a very subtle truffle flavour. I really loved the sweet and crunchy candied enoki and the crumbly chocolate soil. I have never had mushrooms as a dessert before so I was really impressed with this dish.
When I think of pubs I always think of pub food like schnitzels and roast meals. I was really impressed with the calibre and quality of dishes offered at The Highway bistro and lounge. All the dishes looked and tasted beautiful.
Mushroom month is a special event that only runs for one month so make sure you come to The Highway’s bistro and lounge and try the amazing special dishes on offer before they are gone.
