09 Apr Mezi Mazi
My best friend H and her partner S are moving to Melbourne so I caught up with them for our last dinner together. I chose Meze Mazi because I had been hearing great things about them from various friends and I really wanted to treat my friends to a beautiful last meal in Adelaide.
H and I have known each other since we were 13 years old when we met at maths school. I was sitting by myself when she came up and asked me to go for a walk with her. We hit it off instantly and she asked me to skip school on Monday. I did and we’ve been best friends ever since. 16 years of friendship and still going.
We ordered a few entrees to share to start off with.
Trio of dips consisting of scordalia, melitzanosata and tzatziki. I really loved the eggplant dip! It was so smoky, full of flavour and a real stand out! All dips were beautiful on warm pita bread.
Saganaki prawns in olive oil and feta tomato sauce served with bread. The sauce was rich and delightful.
The octopus cooked in white wine and herbs was so soft and tender. The highlight dish of the night for me. I couldn’t believe how soft it was.
Cumin spiced beef meatballs were also soft and moist.
Beautiful mousaka. Herbed layers of beef mince, eggplants and potato finished with bechamel sauce.
Lamb shoulder with honey mustard glaze and potatoes. This literally melted in my mouth. The tzatziki was full of garlic and packed a punch and really enhanced the dish.
Slow braised beef shoulder with smoked eggplant bechamel and rice. The meat was still a bit tough and didn’t fall apart like the other dishes. It definitely needed a bit more cooking time but still tasted great.
Greek salad added freshness to all the dishes.
For dessert we shared the panna cotta and loukoumades.
The panna cotta was beautifully silky, smooth and the perfect texture. The Greek yoghurt and white chocolate flavour combination was very nice.
Best loukoumades I’ve ever tasted. The honey puffs were crispy on the outside and light and fluffy on the inside. The sugar syrup had the perfect amount of sweetness and the walnuts and sesame gave it delicious crunch.
All the dishes were delightful and all 3 of us really enjoyed the food. Everything was so rich in flavour and so hearty. A really great place for authentic Greek food.
