19 Aug Base Bar
Base Bar is the connecting pizza bar to the Bath Hotel located on The Parade. Previously a spare parts garage, it has now been transformed into a cosy, rustic tapas bar.
At the entrance stands a magnificent Egyptian carved door that dates back over 200 years, while inside exposed brick walls, wooden beams, industrial lights and bar stools give it an urban New York appearance.
On one of the walls a neon purple sign is lit up with the words ‘you wanna pizza me?’ and a giant pizza oven is the centrepiece of the open kitchen.
Executive chef Josh De Haas currently oversees Base Bar, Bath Hotel and Cremone Hotel. Having been head chef at numerous hotels and apprenticing at The Lion Hotel he has vast experience in the Hotel scene. His menu is a mixture of cultures and inspirations taken from his travels and own dining experiences.
Mushroom and feta arancini with garlic aioli and salsa verde. The arancini were deliciously golden and crunchy on the outside with flecks of mushroom and feta throughout.
Soft shell crab baos with cucumber, Asian salad and sriracha hot sauce. These baos were huge! The biggest ones I have ever seen! They were light and extremely fluffy. The soft shell crab were perfectly crispy and golden.
Spanish paella for one with mussels, chorizo, prawn, chicken, green peas and fresh lemon. The rice had absorbed a beautiful yellow colour from the saffron. A delightful smokey crust had formed on the bottom while remaining fluffy on top.
Port Lincoln mussels with chilli, tomato, herbs and apple cider sauce. Seafood and tomato sauce go so well together. The mussels were plump and juicy and the bread was perfect to mop up all that wonderful sauce.
Nutella pizza with dehydrated orange, mascarpone, vanilla streusel crumbs and white chocolate. I was so full after all the food we ordered that I actually thought of skipping dessert! Thank god I questioned myself; because how can I be a food blogger if I don’t order dessert, after over ordering dinner? The pizza crust was light and fluffy with an ever soft chew. The dehydrated orange was really unique and added a slightly bitter citrus flavour which I really enjoyed in contrast to the rich gooey Nutella spread.
Base bar is the ideal place to relax and chill out with some tapas and cocktails. Make sure you bring your appetite and a group of friends because the cocktails are to die for and you won’t be able to stop at one! I highly recommend the frosé which is also boomerang and Instagram worthy. The food servings are also extremely generous you’ll be eating all night long but whatever you do, do not leave without ordering the Nutella pizza. A definite highlight of my meal.
