The weather is getting colder and colder in Adelaide. Winter is upon us and there is no better way to warm up than with a nice hot bowl of Vietnamese beef noodle soup. I usually go to Thanh Thanh in china town or Pho 75 in Croydon for my Vietnamese beef noodle soup fix but A had been insisting that I need to try out Adelaide Pho on Waymouth Street saying it was just as good, if not even better than my beloved Thanh Thanh.
Adelaide Pho is a dark dingy little place and like most asian restaurants has an awful and ugly interior furnished with hideous outdated furniture and decorations. In saying that it does give off the traditional Vietnamese look.
The owners of Adelaide Pho and Thanh Thanh are brother and sister. They used to co own Thanh Thanh together so the menus and the food I assumed would be very similar in taste.
Pho tai nam bo vien. Vietnamese beef noodle soup with freshly sliced beef, slow cooked beef brisket and beef balls. The freshly sliced beef was sliced a bit too thick making it chunky and slow to cook in my soup. The slow cooked beef brisket was not soft and still quite chewy. It definitely needed more cooking time and the beef broth was a little bit too sweet for my liking and not hot enough. I absolutely hate it when my soup isn’t super hot because then it doesn’t cook the fresh beef properly.
The pho here was pretty average in my opinion and I left quite disappointed and underwhelmed. It honestly did not live up to the hype of best pho in Adelaide. For me I still think Thanh Thanh is better and holds that title. Unfortunately based on this occasion I wouldn’t return and I would stick to Thanh Thanh.
