The Lab is a quirky little cafe located inside the Australian Medical Placements building in the eastern suburbs. As their name implies the place is decorated with lots of different medical and lab related accessories. There is also a large periodic table on one of the glass walls adding to the medical theme.
The table water was served in flasks with beakers as cups.
My weak mocha tasted nice. The balance of coffee and chocolate was good. The milk needed a little more steaming as it was lacking in texture.
Antioxidant boost juice. Made with beetroot, carrot, apple, strawberry, lemon, ginger and mint. Surprisingly the juice was very well balanced with a hint of sweetness coming through from the beetroot. I loved that the juice was served inside a beaker to be consistent with the medical décor and theme.
Mushrooms on toast with fig and olive tapenade, avocado and goats curd. I also added some chorizo. The mushrooms were plump and juicy little mouthfuls. The sweetness of the fig and the saltiness of the olive mixed together made the tapenade a really interesting taste sensation and I quite liked it. The chorizo was not as spicy as I anticipated it to be but it had a lovely smokey flavour and the goats curd was creamy and smooth.
Strawberry tart. This little tart was so delightful. Smooth and luscious crème patisserie inside a crispy buttery tart case topped with fresh strawberries. I was so disappointed that I did not buy more than one.
The Lab is such an interesting and unique themed cafe. The food is pretty simple but delicious nonetheless. Be sure to get in early as the place is quite small with only a handful of tables.
