Sushi Planet is a contemporary Japanese restaurant specialising in freshly made sushi, chargrilled yakitori skewers and quality seafood.
After the success of their CBD outlet on West Terrace, they have opened up a second location in the North Eastern suburb of Modbury.
The venue is sleek with a combination of modern and traditional Japanese elements. Polished concrete floors with wooden furnishings give off a warm atmosphere with a subtle elegance. There are several seating options including private booths for smaller groups with more intimacy, a la carte seating for those who prefer a more traditional dining setting and by the bar close to the action where you can see the sushi masters preparing your food.
Uramaki also known as inside out roll and more popular in western sushi bars. The Sushi Planet version comes topped with various ingredients. The combinations of fillings and toppings such as chicken with cheese and shrimp with mango were interesting and creative.
Shrimp roll with avocado. Breaded shrimp with spicy sauce roll topped with avocado, unagi sauce and sesame seeds.
Aburi salmon roll. Avocado, snow peas and cucumber with miso aioli sauce roll topped with seared salmon, unagi sauce, sesame seeds and salmon roe.
Shrimp roll with mango. Breaded shrimp with miso aioli sauce roll topped with mango.
Avocado and cucumber roll. Avocado and cucumber rolled in sesame seeds.
Tuna and avocado roll. Tuna and avocado rolled in flying fish roe topped with Japanese mayo.
Chicken and avocado roll. Chicken and avocado rolled in sesame seeds and topped with Japanese mayo.
Nigiri. The sushi rice was balanced with a mixture of sweetness, saltiness and savouriness leaving the simple toppings to shine.
Aburi salmon nigiri.
Aburi prawn nigiri.
Sashimi. A decadent and vibrant platter consisting of salmon, tuna, kingfish, and scallops thinly sliced to perfection and served raw. The salmon melted in the mouth with a very rich and smooth taste. The tuna was firmer in texture and bolder in flavour, the king fish was light and very mild and the scallops were incredibly soft and delicate with a hint of lemon flavour.
Beef tataki. The meat was lightly seared while the inside remained rare. The dressing was slightly creamy with a delicate and nutty flavour.
The creation of sushi is an art, and has colourful stories associated with it. A common Japanese legend is that a truly great sushi master should be able to create nigiri sushi in which all of the rice grains face the same direction but I won’t place that pressure on the Sushi Planet chefs here. They have done a fantastic job in my opinion.
Sushi Planet have done great in combining modern flavours with traditional methods. The ingredients were extremely fresh, vibrant and exquisite.
They also offer delivery through UberEats where you can have sushi delivered straight to your door. Perfect for those nights where you want to enjoy a gourmet meal without leaving your house.
