One of the best suburban asian eateries. K and I come here nearly every weekend for our noodle fix.
What I love about asian places is everything is home made from family recipes passed down from generation to generation so you know it’s the real deal.
The place is a small shop front amongst 20 other different shops along the front of the Churchill Centre strip. They have a picture menu with numbers on the board for easy ordering and you just order at the counter.
I got bun bo hue which is spicy beef noodle soup. It came with sliced beef, pork hock and pork roll. The soup had the perfect amount of chilli. Enough to give it extra flavour and dimension and not over powering at all.
K got banh canh gio heo which is thick tapioca noodle soup. It came with pork hock, chicken and prawns which was also really good. I usually get this dish if I don’t feel like bun bo hue.
These 2 dishes are the best and my favourites. I always alternate between the 2 and I can’t seem to try anything else on the menu when I come here because I love them so much even on a hot summer day.
All the meats are thinly sliced and they were so soft and tender. A result from cooking over low heat for a long period of time. The noodles were firm and also perfectly cooked.
Every asian eatery has their own secret family recipe to make the perfect stock. I absolutely love how Phonomena make their stock. It’s so light, clean and clear and it doesn’t leave a nasty after taste like some other places I’ve been to.
All the garnishes are self serve so it’s good if you don’t like coriander or bean sprouts. You can add as little or as much as you like.
They also do banh mi and baos if you’re in a hurry or don’t feel like eating something too filling.
The only downside to Phonomena is they don’t have much ventilation. When you’re eating a hot bowl of soup and sweating like mad it’s not very comfortable. They definitely need better air conditioning.
